Thyroid Problem

Hyperthyroidism is the over production of thyroxin hormone by the thyroid gland. This over production increases the body’s metabolism and oxygen consumption. Thyroid gland, a butter fly shaped gland in the front of the neck, is an endocrine gland secreting a vital hormone called thyroxine. A variety of conditions cause hyperthyroidism including:

• Grave’s disease an autoimmune disorder
• Excess iodine
• Thyroiditis or inflammation of thyroid gland
• Tumors of thyroid or pituitary glands

Hypothyroidism also called under active thyroid is a condition where the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroxine. This can affect heart rate, body temperature and all aspects of metabolism. Hypothyroidism is most prevalent in older women.

• Hashimoto’s thyroiditis an auto immune disorder
• Certain medications
• Too little iodine in diet
• Pregnancy
• Pituitary gland disorder
• Hypothalamus disorder
